View Partially Obstructed is a collection of music from 2009 by composer Ryan Lott, founder of genre-defying band Son Lux. Initially commissioned by Gibney Dance, the original evening-length work of the same name was choreographed by Gina Gibney and included an ensemble of five dancers and live projected visuals by Joshue Ott using his superDraw software. It premiered in October of 2009 in New York City at Baryshnikov Arts Center. Lott’s score incorporates evocative fragments of voice, field recordings, pianos, stringed instruments and organized noise.
Of the collection, Lott reflects, “View Partially Obstructed is one of many collaborations with Gina Gibney from between 2006-10. Most of the projects were evening-length endeavors, so our body of work constitutes several hours of music. Gina's patient aesthetic for these long form works afforded me the opportunity to thoroughly investigate the emotional characteristics of very small fragments of sound. I developed a habit of this, which has informed my approach to everything, especially my work as Son Lux."
Critic Quinn Batson remarks, “View Partially Obstructed is a world unto itself ... this is a big piece in so many ways,” and Eva Yaa Asantewaa of Dance Magazine concludes, “Along with Gibney’s smart, appealing quintet of dancers, these collaborators invite us to sink into a dynamic, sense-saturated world.”
